Making rsh, vdump and dd play together

I have several alphas that I back up to a dat drive on another alpha. All
running DU 4.0b. Quite a while ago I got a script from this group that, in
summary, does:

vdump -0u -b 60 -f - /usr | rsh tapeserver dd of=/dev/nrmt0h bs=60k

This has worked well for quite a while (though a vdump equivalent to rdump
would be nicer!), but we've started to run into filesystems that are larger
than will fit on one tape. dd will prompt for a second tape, but the
prompt and/or response aren't making it through the vdump datastream. At
that point, everything hangs. Killing the backup job often causes the tape
to go into a permanently hung state requiring a reboot.

Does anyone know if it's possible to use this technique (or a variation) to
make a multi-tape backup?
