if not alpha, then ? sun:hp:ibm

Due to some support issues, a financial system we were considering
does not want to run on DU with Informix as its database. While
Alpha was one of the supported platforms, we now find out that
they primarily support SUN,HP,IBM and that DU+Informix is a
non-supported combination. On the other platforms, Informix
seems to be the main choice over Oracle.

I had planned on running this application on a machine in the
class of a 2100 5/300 with 8 rz29b-vw in a RAID level 5 configuration.
Memory would have been probaby 512Meg.

So I am soliciting opinions on which of the other vendors to select,
what would be a similar configuration to the system above, and
any other thoughts that might be helpful. (Going with another
vendor at this point is not an option.) I'll try to summarize
on a statistical basis with some of the comments and will avoid
names if asked to avoid them.

Side question -- has anyone seen a commercial vendor install
their software insisting on a install as root with umask 0
so that ALL files and programs, including their SUID root
programs, are 777 or 666? (I will NOT name names if anyone
tells me about this!)
