Hello alpha-osf-managers

My problem was:

the function setpwfile() to direct user lookups to a special
   file did not work.

The answers were:

a) Workaround by John Mann (within a few hours, thank you!)

use the *_local() functions. they honor the use of setpwfile()

b) Official DEC Call answered by Stefan Bienz,

Based on the Digital Support Database the function setpwfile()
is there as an accident, originating from ULTRIX roots.
The author of the article states:
   o the function is there
o the function is not "supported"
o the use is currently limited to *_local() functions
o thinks it will disappear in the future

For us, that implies that setpwfile() is unusable. Software working
today may stop working by upgrading to a higher OS release. We are
looking for some other solution, namely to replace the passwd handling
with free code which we integrate into our software.

Thanks to:
   John Mann <John.Mann_at_cc.monash.edu.au>
   Stefan Bienz <stefan_at_zuo.dec.com>
