I've purchased an EB164 333 MHz Alpha machine with a 2 GB Seagate Barracuda,
128 MB RAM, 2 MB cache, QLogic F/W SCSI-2 controller and I cannot seem to
install DU 4.0a. When I issue the command 'Boot DKA400', it starts the
install, and sometimes I even get to copying files, but it will always die,
never twice in the same place. Sometimes I get to the install GUI, sometimes I
don't. I always get the same error message, as follows:
panic (cpu 0): Processor Machine Check
syncing disks...
DUMP: No primary swap, no explicit dumpdev.
Nowhere to put header, giving up.
CP - SAVE_TERM routine to be called
CP - SAVE_TERM exited with hlt_req=1 r0=00000000.00000000
halted CPU0
halt code=5
HALT instruction executed
PC=fffffc0000405040
I've never installed DU before, and I haven't used it much, but I'm following
the install instructions to the letter. The vendor sent me out a replacement
motherboard, but that didn't change a thing. (That was DEC's recommendation)
I've tried running 'isacfg -init', per someone else's recommendation, but that
didn't help. One thing I've noticed, but I don't know if it matters, is that
when it's booting to the install, it gives me the message that it's going into
over-committment swap mode. Isn't that for machines with little RAM? It's
definitely seeing all 128 MB, though. Does that matter?
Please help, this is just my personal machine, and I don't want to have to go
to WinNT!
