No root passwd :-(

Well it happened

shortly after thinking "its not good for our helpdesk staff to use
"passwd" as root to reset passwords - I'd better jot down a script to
check for a parameter - can't have them changing the root password by
accident!"

sure enough - BEFORE I got the script going - I arrive to work and get
an "aaaaahhh -Dave I think I did somethin silly"

Try as we did we couldn't crack the password.

Now the only way I know is to ask everyone to log off
Hit the wee red button
Boot into single user mode
Reset the password.

Or does anyone have an elegant, clean, way of kicking people off without
being root?

Or any other solution

Cheers
Dave

Pretentious quote of the week:
Beware of bugs in the above code; I have only proved it correct, not
tried it.
