Hello,
My original question is:
Would somebody please let me know any tools which can work under
Digital UNIX like as MONITOR Utility of VMS ?
And I received replies as attached at the end of this message.
Then I decided to use vmstat command, ps auxw command, "top" from Freeware CD,
and "monitor" from
ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/DEC/monitor.alpha.tar.Z
simultaneously to know my required information concurrently.
Polycenter Performance Solution plays back recorded data and it doesn't have
realtime information feedback function. It's very nice tool to analyze system
condition (I use it on VMS platform) but it doesn't meet my requirement this
time.

Andre, Jo, Jon,
Thank you for your information !!!!
Saif,
I'm live in Yokohama, Japan.
Best Regards,

UNIX's counterpart to the monitor utility is the "TOP"
program found at many websites for download including:
http://WWW.UNIX.DIGITAL.COM/demos/freekit/html/tbl_packages.html
Harald Lundberg <hl_at_tekla.fi> replied:
top, syd, vmubc are a few tools. None of them come with the system,
though, so you'll have to get them off the net. 'top' is probably on the
freeware cd.
Rainer Landes <rlandes_at_fphws01.physik.uni-karlsruhe.de> replied:
This is not exactly what you requested, but "top" shows the current
processes that are using most of the cpu-cycles.
From top's README:
Here are HTML links for the two best "top" archive sites:
<A HREF="
ftp://ftp.groupsys.com/pub/top>Top archive (groupsys.com)</A>
<A HREF="
ftp://eecs.nwu.edu/pub/top>Top archive (eecs.nwu.edu)</A>
New releases will be posted to comp.sources.unix as they become
available.

have a look at :

Arun Sanghvi <sanghvi_at_proto.wilm.ge.com> replied:
There is a public domain softwae "monitor". It does not have
all the features of VMS monitor.
William H. Magill <magill_at_isc.upenn.edu> replied:
It's even called "monitor"... While not quite as flexible as the VMS
version, it does well.
ftp it from gatekeeper.dec.com
pub/DEC/monitor.alpha.tar.Z
Additionally, similar and quit useful is Randy Hayman's sys_stat:
ftp://raven.alaska.edu/pub/randy/perf_mon_tools//sys_stat-1.4.tar.gz]
Also, under 4.0, the Performance Monitor (I forget its name, we're still
running 3.2G in production and I don't have a working 4.0 system handy.)
is quite good. I think its listed as a polycenter product, but don't
recall.
Also, there are 2 "remote diagnostic" parts.
DSNlink 2.1A is available from the DSN folks. (You need a maintenance
contract.) Complementing DSNlink, again in the 4.0 CDs, but works under
3.2g - is DECevent. This can be used in 2 different modes. To get the
license for the remote reporting, talk to your field service folks.
MPH is also burried in the OS docs. It is installed automatically, but
not activated:
/usr/field/mph/MPH_OSF_O18.CSH
This reports certain statistical info back to DEC, and is not as useful
locally.
Dennis E. Giroux <dgiroux_at_admin.aurora.edu> replied:
Try, as a priv user, the command: top
If top command does not work. Go out on the web and search for a
compressed file "top-3.4.beta2.tar.Z". Must be installed.
Kent R Arnott <karnott_at_falcon.tamucc.edu> replied:
Try monitor.
ftp to ftp.tamucc.edu:/pub/unix/utils/monitor.tar.gz
I haven't seen the VMS utility but this one will give
you system events etc...also try the utility TOP
which give you a break down by process with the one consuming the most
cpu listed at the top ...
Christian Miranda <cmiranda_at_gmd.com.pe> replied:
You can use Polycenter FullSail.
If you want to recollect information, you can use Polycenter
performance advisor.
Alan Davis <davis_at_decatl.alf.dec.com> replied:
It's available on the atlanta ftp site :
atlanta.service.digital.com:/pub/kits/monitor.osf.Z
Syd and vmubc are there as well.
syd_v32a.tar.Z vmubc.tar.gz
Andre Delafontaine <delaand_at_pigeon.echostar.com> replied:
We are using the Polycenter Performance Advisor for Digital Unix. I
was told that it is also available for VMS.
It collects detailed information about processes, disk I/O, cpu load,
network activity, etc in background.
The data can then be reviewed and graphed. The tool will also hint you
about ways to optimize the system.
If you don't want to pay for the Performance Advisor, you can use the
'top' and 'syd' utilities that are free. top cores after a couple of
days. syd is pretty nice and I think it comes on a (freeware ?) CD
with DU.
Jo Knox <fxjwk_at_aurora.alaska.edu> replied:
Somebody ported monitor to Unix; there's one available at:
ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/DEC/monitor.alpha.Z
Jon Brinkmann <jb_at_galileo.apo.nmsu.edu> replied:
There is a nice utility to monitor CPU usage on UNIX platforms called
"top". The latest version of "top" is always available via anonymous
FTP from the host "eecs.nwu.edu" in the directory "/pub/top".
Additional modules will be made available in the directory "/pub/top/m".
