boot hangs before entering single user mode

I was running DU4.0 on an alpha workstation 400. Here is what
happend:

To test a new pseudo-device driver I configured the driver module
by statically compiling it into the kernel. I rebooted the machine
with the new kernel. It hung after executing the update command
in the multi-user mode. I booted the machine with the INTACT
GOOD kernel. But it hung right before entering SINGLE-user mode.
That is, after it finished all static device configuration and right
before it (should) print "INIT: SINGLE USER MODE".

The root file system is not corrupted. I can boot from CDROM and
mount both the root file system and the /usr file system. I have
checked the integrity of all possible files that I can think of
that are related to the booting process (e.g. /vmunix and all
files in /sbin). They all seem to be fine.

It seems that the new device driver somehow screwed up certain files
on disk. However, so far I can't find any file that is corrupted.

Here is a brief list of the console booting messages:

------------

...skipped..

Alpha boot ...
Digital Unix 4.0 ...

...skipped..

... device configuration ...

lvm0 configured.
lvm1 configured.
dli configured.

It hangs right here.
(Normally the message "INIT: SINGLE USER MODE" should be printed)

------------

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated!
