DU 4.0B and debugging

Dear managers, I'm experiencing a BIG trouble with machines
running DU4.0B. The different configurations are as follows:
        AlphaServer 1000 4/233 256MB, AlphaStation 4/255 96MB,
        AXPpci33 (noname) 64MB, AlphaStation 600 5/266 128MB.
The problem is: every time any user on these machines (either
privileged or not) tries to debug code (using dbx or ladebug),
the machine crashes (!!). About 80% of total cases the message
is: illegal instruction (and you get a memory and system dump).
For the remaining 20% there are no messages at all (and the
machine crashes and hungs up in an undefinite state -> reset)
I have also one machine (AXP3000) running DU4.0A and this one
does not present this behaviour. Any ideas ???
        TIA
