Thanks to all who responded. It's working now. I discovered a suspicious
.Xauthority file so I deleted it. I was able to bring up CDE on a
the system console using his login. I suggested he reboot his xtube and
try again. At that point it was working. So I don't know if the xtube
was funky, or the .Xauthority was bad, but it's working so that's
good enough for me :-)
