Hi DU Admins
I was asking about attaching a colour inkjet to the parallel
port of an au series workstation and printing to it through
ghostscript.
Thanks to Gyula Szokoly, Tom Webster, Andre Delafontaine,
Emanuele Lombardi, Don Newcomer, Jeff Lessem and Jim Belonis.
All said it could be done and I got several printcap entries
and filters for a variety of printers which is exactly what
I was looking for.
Guyla suggested getting the latest version of Aladdin Ghostscript,
which I've done, and making sure the printer we intend
to buy is supported.
Both Tom and Jeff suggested getting the magicfilter program from
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/printing/magicfilter-1.2.tar.gz
Tom had a couple of other suggestions:
1. LPRng -- There are patches for LPRng to allow the local host to perform
APS filtering PRIOR to sending the job to a remote printer. LPRng looks
pretty cool, but requires you to replace your normal BSD printing tools.
The big problem with that is that LPRng tends to get wiped out every time
you upgrade DU.
2. If you are looking at an HP or another net printer that allows you
to print directly to a TCP port, DU is supposed to treat that as a
local printer (meaning that filters are applied). You should be able
to use APS with a TCP/telnet printer. [by APS I think Tom is
referring to the magicfilter program]
Thanks again
Ian
