Two-headed display woes

Recently I took over a AlphaStation 255 system running DU 3.2g and am
attempting to make it work with two ZLXp2-EV4 graphics adapters. The first
screen works normally, but the second does not.

When I attempt to start an X client on the second screen (e.g., "xclock
-display :0.1"), I see nothing on the second screen, but I see a line of
corrupt pixels about three-quarters of the way down the first screen.

Both adapters are recognized at boot time:

Jul 16 11:03:02 trainer1 vmunix: tga1 at pci0 slot 12
Jul 16 11:03:02 trainer1 vmunix: tga1: depth 8, map size 2MB, 1280x1024
Jul 16 11:03:02 trainer1 vmunix: tga0 at pci0 slot 13
Jul 16 11:03:02 trainer1 vmunix: tga0: depth 8, map size 2MB, 1280x1024

X knows of the existence of both adapters, and tries to use them both. Mwm
is started with the -multiscreen option. The mouse pointer is visible on
either second screen with no problems.

"sizer -gr" returns:

1280x1024 1280x1024

"sizer -gt" returns:

ZLXp2-EV4
ZLXp2-EV4

Any clues on where to look for the problem?
