If you have the sendmail daemon running, all you need to do is
telnet to port 25, the sendmail port, on the machine. Sendmail will
announce what version it is and then you can just disconnect.
If you don't have the daemon running, I think /usr/sbin/sendmail -d0.1
will display the version.
Thanks to all the rest who told me the same thing.
It turns out that 4.0d is running sendmail version 5.65!!!
