Hi all,
I have recently set up NIS on a local domain with
a single AlphaServer 2100A and two Linux boxes. The
Alpha is the master server. The linux boxes are clients.
That is, there is no slave server at this point.
I used nissetup to configure the master server, and used
the Linux NIS-Howto to manually configure the linux boxes as clients.
Everything seemed to work fine initially. The NIS maps
seem to get sent to the linux boxes. However, at some
point I decided to try changing the NIS password of my
own user account.
I logged onto the master server (the Alpha) and used
yppasswd to change my NIS password. This process was
successful in that the password field in the passwd NIS
map changed. For purposes of illustration, the Alpha is
called regie5, the linux boxes are latour and lafite, and
my username is brash.
If I use the ypmatch command, I get:
regie5:brash> ypmatch brash passwd
brash:g96KwA.bg.S3g:402:15:Edward J. Brash:/home/brash:/usr/local/bin/tcsh
latour:~$ ypmatch brash passwd
brash:g96KwA.bg.S3g:402:15:Edward J. Brash:/home/brash:/usr/local/bin/tcsh
lafite:~$ ypmatch brash passwd
brash:g96KwA.bg.S3g:402:15:Edward J. Brash:/home/brash:/usr/local/bin/tcsh
That is, the new passwd map seems to have been picked up by all machines.
Finally, the problem...
I try now to log into lafite and latour with the new password and
it works great, BUT, when I try to log into regie5, the Alpha and
master server, it does not recognize that I have a new password,
and keeps the old one.
I have included the +: symbol at the end of the /etc/passwd file
on regie5 (and some variant of this as well on the linux boxes).
I have no idea what else to check at this point. Any ideas anyone
might have will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Ed.
