Hello everyone:
In planning for the eventual phase out of an IBM 3090 class mainframe, I
am investigating ways to allow Digital Unix users to read IBM 3480 tape
cartridges. This is an academic computer environment with only a few dozen
heavy computer users who store their data on 3480 tapes. I believe that in
total, there are 1,500 cartridges in our academic library, many of which
probably contain obsolete data and we have about two years from now to
complete this migration.
What we want to do is buy a 3480 tape drive (not a jukebox) to connect to
a Alpha workstation. The workstation would run Digital Unix 4.0d or later.
This workstation would be available in our central computer help desk area
so our clients with data on 3480 tapes can migrate their data to our disk
storage on our Trucluster via our network. Of course, we will also need
software that can read the various types of EBCDIC formats that can be
created in an IBM VM/CMS mainframe environment. We would also need
software that provides the same type of functionality as IBM's Ditto
software which analyses a tape to determine the format on which the data
are stored on a tape. I searched
http://www.digital.com for this
equipment, but I came up dry. If anyone has any ideas on this matter and
where I might find the products we need, please do let me know.
Thank you,
