Got plenty of answers to this one. Thanks everybody. I'm sorta new at this
firmware level stuff.
Everybody came up with essentially the same thing. Following is the more
verbose
of the the answers.
>The card, the hub port, and ifconfig should all be set consistently for it
all to work. If
>your network admins are under the illusion that auto negotiation is the
way to configure
>the hub port, you are in for a hard time.

>On the newer alphas, if the card is your first, then at the console level:
>
>set ewa0_mode twisted-pair
>set ewa0_mode full
>
>set ewa0_mode fast
>set ewa0_mode fastfd
>
>tell the card to expect (respectively), a 10Mbit, 10Mbit full duplex,
100Mbit, 100Mbit full duplex
>connection. Make sure your net admin does the SAME at the port.
>In /etc/rc.config it is also a good idea to make sure your IFCONFIG line
>contains
>speed 10
>speed 20
>speed 100
>speed 200
>as appropriate, just in case...
