Well,

yesterday, I upgraded a DEC 3000/400 from Digital UNIX 3.0 (actually, it
may have been DEC OSF/1) to Digital UNIX 4.0A. We were shooting for DU
4.0B, but we ran out of time.

The machine runs Oracle 7.1.4, and the customer wanted to defer the upgrade
to a later version of Oracle until later. They also have lots of
customization and we did not want to have to re-install Oracle.

We had already tested that Oracle 7.1.4 would run or 4.0B.

Actually, I had already worked on this machine when I was a Digital
employee, and I remember the 3000/400s with fondness.

The upgrade went relatively smoothly. I increased the size of the root
partition by stealing some space from the swap partition on rz0 (they had
488 MB of swap on a machine with 128MB of memory, and they run on lazy swap
mode).

We went from 3.0 to 3.2, 3.2 to 3.2c, 3.2c to 3.2g (via setld, all rest via
installupdate), and then 3.2g to 4.0A.

During one of the steps the system clock was set to 2022, thus allowing us
to check the Y2K compliance of the DEC 3000/400 and one of their applications.

We started up Oracle after most of the steps above, and it worked fine,
especially after the last step :-)

Now, to help them with all their Y2K needs :-)

To top it all off, yesterday (Saturday, when I did the work) was a rainy
day here in Adelaide, and today (Sunday) is fine and sunny :-)

Regards
