automounter not working

Hi Managers,

We have two AlphaStations - a 500 and a 600 with DU 4.0D, and frequently share large files
between ourselves and other groups. I recently tried to invoke the automounter from both the
command line and the widget, but to no avail. From the widget (under the
sys_admin/configure/NFS button) a status flag continues to indicate "stopped" after I commit to
running automounter regardless of the arguments I give it. From the command line, although the
automount command seems to take, when the next command is entered (any command), I get a message
resembling "automount stopped". I have tried all variations of indirect, direct, and master
maps and have verified that the correct NFS subsets are installed on the system (OSFNFS425 and
OSFNFSCONF425). We do not use NIS so that is not complicating this issue. Also, I can use the
mount command to access the files on any of the NFS machines, so I'm pretty sure that this
problem is limited to the automount daemon. Does anyone have any gems of wisdom to lead me back
to the enlightened path? Will gladly summarize.

Thanks in advance.
