I received several suggestions. Here is what worked for me:
Pressing the F11 key works (I was told F10 might work but it did not
for me).
Also use the CTRL-[ sequence - this too worked for me.

My Original Question was:
We recently hooked up a Raritan Master Console switchbox to replace
several DUNIX V4.0a systems and two DUNIX V4.0d systems. These
Raritan switches are resold and installed by DECompaq. Everything
works a-ok except the escape key. Whenever I'm in the vi editor and
press the escape key nothing happens. If I telnet to these boxes and
go into vi then the escape key functions normally. The escape key on
the consoles was functioning normally before the Raritan switch was
introduced.
