9Gb Disk on Digital UNIX

We just put a ~4Gb and a ~9Gb disk (SCSI) onto our Alpha (V 4.0b). I can
use disklabel to start things rolling with the 4Gb disk, but just get I/O
error when trying it on the 9GB disk. I can communicate with this 9Gb disk
OK from the UNIX (sorry things like echo hello >/dev/rrz17c). I have a
feeling its something in the config which isn't big enough, but maybe not.
Any ideas?

NB: Its an RZ10F disk. disklabel -p is happy to display the config, and from
it I've even created a disktab entry though I don't this is needed.
