I received three suggestions:
1. Download the latest (v5.2) firmware kit from Digital's web site, and make
up a bootable floppy to do the upgrade from;
2. Pull out the network cable and try again;
3. Get a replacement CD.
The easiest to try was (2), which worked. The only oddity was a warning that the firmware I
was loading (v5.0-101) was older than the current version (v4.8-74). I'm not sure whether
to laugh or cry at that.
Thanks to all respondents (you know who you are).
