hello all
{original}
i added more ptys (16 to be exact) to an alpha server 2100 running DU3.2g
now there seems to be a problem of,
bash: fork: operation would block
is it because i added more ptys and is there any way to stop this from
happening?
{additional info}
nathan grass (cheers) asked me for more information
1) What PTY's are being used by users experiencing this error?
2) What are they doing when the get this error?
3) What is the uptime on the server?
4) How many users are connected when the error occurs?
1)To find out which ptys they were using you type w.
It turns out that this problem is not process or user specific.
2)They can be doing anything from as little as "ls". then try it again 30
seconds later and it may work.
3-4)when i got uptime on server the user load was changinng a great deal it
may have to do with this and is there anything i can do about it,
there are only two cpu's in the server and here is a copy of some of the
uptimes before and after this problem would pop up,
15:47 up 1 day, 19:07, 52 users, load average: 5.14, 4.93, 4.58
bash: fork: operation would block (was popping up here, i kept pressing
uptime until next line came up)
15:50 up 1 day, 19:10, 52 users, load average: 4.71, 4.01, 3.78
15:56 up 1 day, 19:16, 52 users, load average: 2.33, 2.42, 2.50
bash: fork: operation would block
few people logged out
16:00 up 1 day, 19:20, 49 users, load average: 2.63, 2.88, 3.10
16:02 up 1 day, 19:21, 49 users, load average: 5.33, 4.23, 3.87
16:02 up 1 day, 19:22, 49 users, load average: 3.49, 3.92, 3.81
16:02 up 1 day, 19:22, 49 users, load average: 4.31, 3.83, 3.77
16:03 up 1 day, 19:22, 49 users, load average: 4.00, 3.69, 3.69
16:03 up 1 day, 19:23, 49 users, load average: 4.57, 3.97, 3.84
INFO: on finding cpu usage by user
For me to find out what 'userx' was consuming I would find out what tty was
being used from 'w',
and then use the command: ps xagv | grep ttyp1
