Basic advise was to ignore the defaults...
All recommended at least 256MB for / and 1GB or more for /usr and /var.
With 9GB I have a lot to play with.
For completeness I've included the responses below.
The response created for me a question about swap but I'll start a new
thread for that one.
Thanks to all!

Daniel,
The current defaults for the root partition ("a") on a system disk should
be 128Mb (262144 blocks). With 9Gb system disks you should have room to
spare and I would feel good about doubling that allocation (524288 blocks).
The / partition isn't where I have problems with space... I need more
/usr and /var for all the layered software that I install. I envy you
having 9Gb to play with...

I've gotten into the habit of using 128 MB for the root
file system. That leaves plenty of space for current
versions and should allow for growth. Depending on the
system I use 128 MB or 256 MB for page/swap. If you
foresee the system having to page, plan to spread the
page/swap space out over multiple devices. My systems
are largely for testing new versions of the CLC Media
Changer driver and the Media Robot Utility, so it is
sufficient to have the rest of the disk be /usr. For
as much space as you have, you might want to size /usr
and /var as needed and separate them. Then leave some
space as a partition that can be carved up later or used
as needed.

Daniel
In any ERP application you should have typically the following
root: 500MB
SWAP: 2-3 Times the memory
Usr: 1-1.5GB

Hi Daniel,
You are absolutely right about the default system partitions.
1) I have set / at 1gig which is overkill. I recommend 500meg.
2) /usr I set a 4gig since this is where many layered products that will be
installed later will reside. This gives me much leeway and you may be happy
with 1gig. Bear in mind that if you are using NSR for backups, that the
index files for it grow a rapid rate. Mine grow at about 35meg a day and I
keep the last two weeks on line.
3) DEC support and most people in this group recommend following the swap=2
or 3 times physical RAM. This is different from the HP-UX environment that
I came from and seems wasteful, however running out of swap is a BAD thing
which could cause corruption of most of your system according to DEC
support.
Good luck with your installs

I'd size / as 262160 blocks, and usr as 1048608 blocks, putting var on its
own
partition.
