Pop Vs. Imap via NFS Q's

We are currently still having problems with slow pop3 checks. Our setup
is this. A netapp 230 Filer (24G) with 3 alphas (4.0D) connected via NFS
to the netapp. /var/spool/mail and /usr/users are mounted via NFS on the
three machines. My question is this:

When a user has a large mailbox (>3M) it takes sometimes 1 min or more to
authenticate via qpopper. I am running qpopper2.53 (2.4 was a little
faster for this, but still had problems.) and was wondering if maybe the
slowness problem is qpopper, our setup (nfs), or something else. I am
investigating going to an Imap server, since there are so few pop3 servers
that will run with C2. Would I still see these problems going to imap?
Is anyone else running a setup similar to this and maybe not seeing
problems like I am?

TIA,
Brian
