PPP on Digital Unix and how to figure out

I have Configured PPP on my Digital Unix workstation and I am facing few
problems in that

a. Sometimes all of a sudden the modem goes to the quiet mode whereby
it stops answering. When I physically switch off and on the modem it
works well. has anybody come accross this error?

b. Second problem is ..How would I know if a user is Comein through a
Modem line using PPP. Whats the process which gets created on Unix which
tells me that modem line is being used?
