The original message is at the end of this summary.
It appears that some utilities like tar do not understand remote addresses
like rcp etc, which I assumed it would. I got quite a few different
suggestions, but the one that I think is probably the best is to use GNU
tar which will understand remote device names.
If anyone would like a list of other suggestions that I received please
email me, and I'll forward copies.
Thanks to the following people for their suggestions.

Bevan Broun
Rich Lafferty

Stefan Heim
Bernt Christandl

Cheers Glenn.

Hi There,
This is probably going to be pretty basic, but I am having problems trying
to do a tar from machine1 to a file on machine2 without success, what am I
missing?
The command I am using is
        tar cvf machine2:/filename /filename_on_machine1
Whenever I execute this I get the message
        tar: cannot open machine2:/filename
I have machine2 listed in /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.equiv and /.rhosts
Machine1 is a HPUX 9.04 and machine2 is DU3.2g
If anyone has any suggestions please email me.
TIA
Glenn.
