userdel gives "Password entry corrupted"

Hi,

when trying to remove a user with "removeuser", "dxaccounts" or the raw
"userdel" command under base security and V4.0D, I always get the message:

userdel: Password entry is corrupted. Please repair the password file and then
run Account Manager

However, the password file seems ok. I also tried without hashed database
(=passwd.dir/.pag), tried with rebuilt database, tried with just one user in
the passwd file: always the same.

I have no problems in adding accounts with dxaccounts or adduser, but removing
the new accounts gives again the message ...

I'm not sure whether the commands ever worked since upgrading from 4.0A, since
I didn't use them for a long time.

Thanks for any hints,
