advfs problems

Help...

Last week the rz28 in a single volume advfs domain began to fail. My
original plan was to add another volume to the domain, balance the load,
and then remove the original disk from the domain. The plan worked fine
until I tried removing the original disk from the domain. The rmvol
utility failed. I called DEC and they had me run a utility,
/usr/field/msfsck, to repair the file system. It ran for about 6 hours.
After it completed, I again tried to remove the original volume. The rmvol
utility failed again. At this point I tried to remove the new volume from
the domain. This time rmvol ran all weekend, logging cpu time, but did not
complete. The volume is still there. I have a backup tape and a third
disk -- a brand new disk. Can I safely down the system, remove both disks,
install the new disk as the original rz1 drive, and run vrestore? I know I
have to remove the link to the second volume in the domain in /etc/fdmns
and label the new disk before I run the vrestore utility. Do I need to
comment out the line in /etc/fstab that mounts the advfs while I am
replacing the disk? My question is what do I have to do and in what order?
The other file systems are functioning fine and I don't want to
accidentally screw them up. I also need to minimize down time. Any help
from admins more familiar with advfs would be greatly appreciated.
