Thankyou Tom Webster, Stephen LaBelle and Mandell Degerness for your
replies.

To add information to the NSR indexes concerning a tape not contained
within them, simply use

scanner -i <tape device>

I tried this and it works fine, although it can take awhile.

To find out what files are on the tape, without rebuilding the indexes,
use

scanner -c <client> <tape device> -x uasm

OR

scanner -is <SSID #gotten using mminfo> -c <client> -rvn

Note that I have not tried either of these.
