Blank screen instead of X

Alpha OSF Managers,

I have an Alphastation 200. I just loaded 4.0d on it with the
latestpatches. When the computer boots up, it seems to boot fine
until it starts X. Then, the screen becomes completely black.
I can hear the disk drive running and it is obviously coming up
in X, but not displaying anything. I can even log in, entering
name and password. But again, no luck getting anything on the
screen (although, again, I hear the disk drive churning away,
obviously logging me in). So:

Question 1: Anybody come across this? Any thoughts?

Question 2: Is there a way to terminate X with some keystroke at
the console?
