Below is Alan's comments and solution.

Remove the -DNEXUS_LIST option from the list of -D options in the
Makefile and recompile Monitor. Even the Freeware distribution
should include source. There's enough compiler on the system to
do this, even if you don't have the license. You shouldn't use
the compiler this way, but the ultimate source of the problem
is in the operating system.
For what it is worth, this problem only seems to happen on some
systems, the DEC 8400 being among them. Most systems don't seem
to have the problem.
