Amazing. As usual less than 5 min after the question, the right answer

His answer:
Hi-
I have only seen this feature occur when someone's preferences
(Netscape 3.x) were pointed at the wrong (nonexistent) directory.
This occurred after they had moved homedirectories to a new machine.
What does netscape think your bookmark file is? Look at
preferences.js to see:
user_pref("browser.bookmark_file",
"/myhomedir/.netscape/bookmarks.html");
Good Luck

PS. No problems under 4.05 for me. (I do not use the mail tool).
This was the problem. I edited the preference.js and now it save my
bookmarks.
Thanks a lot.
--------------
Mike Iglesias gave me an other advice, I will follow:
I have not seen the problem you are having with 4.06, but that release
crashes more often on my system than 4.05 did. 4.5_PR2 (4.5 beta 2) is
now available for DU, so you might want to try that.
Thanks also.
