ADVFS problems

Hi,
this night I moved an external disk with a ADVFS spanning 2 disks from
one machine to another (from 3.2d machine to 4.0b machine )
After rebooting, I could not mount the Filesystem which has come corrupt
on one disk. Maybe there was a shortcut in the SCSI-cable. (But another
ADVFS-Filesystem in the same external case had no problems)
The strange thing was: trying to mount or check the ADVFS leaded to an
immediate dump and the console prompt with this error message:

Sep 29 20:26:12 mailer2 vmunix: trap: invalid memory read access from
kernel mode
Sep 29 20:26:12 mailer2 vmunix:

As the ADVFS contained the home of more than 400 users I had to restore
the data from our nightly backup with a data loss of about 22 hours. But
for future problems I have some questions:
Is there any utility to repair a corrupt ADVFS?
Why does a corrupt filesystem crash the whole machine in this way? (as
the filesystem was in fstab, I had some difficulties to boot the
machine)

regards

harald
