installation failure

This is on a pci 164+ (I think that is the model number - I'm trying to
diagnose this remotely) alpha.
I'm trying to load the os for the first time (4.0d) and the firmware has
been updated to the necessary
level. The install runs and hangs at this exact point each time:

Loading 15 of 15 subset(s)....

NFS(tm) Configuration Application
   Copying from /ALPHA/BASE (disk)
   Verifying

15 of 15 subset(s) installed successfully.

and goes into a machine check. when you try to boot the box, there is
no kernal and the software has not
gone through the configure process. can I run that configure myself
(and what is the program to do it)?
Any ideas what this machine check is telling me?

thanks
