Networker or other backup software

Until now we're using Digitals Networker in a multiplattform environment
(Clients for Win95, WinNT, MacIntosh, Novell, several Unix variants).
Due to new licence rules (no update possibilities with V.5.2 - you need
a service contract, no cheap PC-Clients) costs are increasing extremly.
My boss wants to know, if there are any (cheaper) alternatives which are
as reliable.
Any experiences, hints or arguments pro or contra networker or
comparable software are welcome.
