Hi,

a few days ago I asked about moving IP addresses between machines and how
DECsafe ASE does it.

I opined that there was a problem with ARP caches in devices out there, and
the answer came back from several quarters, including from Digital:

   gratuitous ARP!

When an IP address (alias) is ifconfig'd onto an interface, a gratuitous
ARP is done, which causes devices out there to update their ARP table. Good
implementations, that is.

Empirical evidence suggests at this stage that Linux (at least 2.0.25) does
not do gratuitous ARP, which is a shame really, as those two Linux machines
I am working on will have some problems when we switch their personalities
around.

It would appear at this stage that
