Sendmail/pop/eudora/dec osf1

I have a dec box running OSF1 V4.0 878 alpha.
Sendmail version Sendmail 5.65v4.0 (1.1.19.2/19Aug98-0907PM) Wed, 7 Oct
1998 10:48:04 -0400,
and pop version QPOP (version 2.53). Our students use eudora light as
there mail client.
We are also using a quota setup on /var/spool/mail/$USERNAME to restrict
disk space to aprox 50mb per user. The Problem I am having is that some
mail is being put into /tmp for some reason.

the normal format of the /var/spool/mail/ directory is as follows
-rw------- 1 user1 mail 0 Oct 6 18:53 .user1.pop
-rw------- 1 user2 mail 0 Sep 28 08:39 user2
-rw------- 1 user3 mail 61854 Oct 1 16:33 user3
-rw------- 1 user4 mail 232135 Sep 28 16:55 user4
etc ... before we upgraded our server from ultrix we had files in the
/var/spool/mail directory with names such as .username.pop, now within
there there is only one or two of these names, instead they have the users
name.

That aside the /tmp directory is getting files which look like
-rw------- 1 user212 system 23555 Oct 6 20:15 maaaABia
-rw------- 1 user322 system 2789 Oct 6 13:20 maaaAvoa
-rw------- 1 user872 system 1306 Oct 6 20:31 maaaBlia
-rw------- 1 user213 system 1514 Oct 6 20:30 maaaBnEa
where are these files being put here from? The file name convention I
cannot find either.
The group ownership is no longer mail so sendmail never deals with these
files again. The files in this directory have one of two properties 1) one
header/message 2) the users whole mail box, almost a copy of
/usr/spool/mail/$USERNAME.

Is it possible that eudora is not able to write the data comming from the
pop (to hard disk or floppy disk ie no space left) and pop is writing them
to /tmp?

A minor problem to this is that /tmp is getting filled up quickly with
messages and is filling up my root volume.

The Spool directory on sendmail is fine under /var/spool/mqueue this is the
default I got from the bat book, and it is getting the queue
data/header/trans/etc files ok, as far as i can tell.
Is this sendmail version actually version 5? or is it something that
someone has hacked and just not put 8.9.x on? Should we upgrade sendmail,
pop, eudora?

Any help in this would be great

thanks in advance
