I posted a question a few weeks back about backup strategies for large data
warehouses. The reponse was terrific and my SUMMARY included most
everyone's ideas on the proper software tools (tar, dump, vdump, etc, etc.)
to do the job.
This is somewhat of a related question, but more from the hardware angle.
We need the ability to backup our 500gb data warehouse in a timely fashion.
(Over the course of a weekend would be sufficient.) In addition we often
have a need to remove or restore large chunks (say, 100-200gb) of
information fairly quickly. (Say, a 4-8 hour turnaround.)
Does anyone have any recommendations on what type of hardware could do the
job. I'm thinking along the lines of a DLT tape library, optical juke boxes
(I've know idea how these compare with tape libraries), or other creative
ideas on how to do the job. I'd prefer to stick with Compaq hardware as a
convenience but I'm not locked into any vendor. Of primary importance is
the ability to do all of this "operator-less". (i.e. I want to be able to
throw a bunch of media in, press a button, and come back when it's done -
"done" defined as the entire 100-200gb's I've told it to backup or restore
is finished, or my entire data warehouse is backed up.)
Many thanks - love this list!
