Hi,
I'm attempting to upgrade a DEC 3000/500 from V3.2G to V4.0D. As
far as I can tell from the various Installation Guides the correct
upgrade
path would be :-
3.2G to 4.0A to 4.0B to 4.0D
However, I was under the impression that 4.0A was a hardware release
applicable to only certain machine types, which would explain why we
don't have a copy of it. Is it possible to go from 3.2G to V4.0?
Just to really muddy the waters further, the system in question has had
the aggregate patches #2 and #3 for 3.2G applied, and has been
baselined with dupatch to mark the following manually added patches
as installed :-
<Extract from baseline.log>
* list of patches manually installed:
----------------------------------
- Commands, Shells, & Utility Patches:
V3.2G Patch 0173.01 - Patch: named, screend Corrections
V3.2G Patch 0174.01 - Patch: uucp Command Corrections
- Kernel Patches:
V3.2G Patch 0111.01 - Patch: Kernel LMF Corrections
- Library Patches:
V3.2G Patch 0244.00 - Patch: libc and shutdown Utility
Corrections
*** User chooses to mark above patches as installed.
<End of extract>
I was under the impression that 3.2x patch kits could interfere with the
V4.0x upgrades - do I need to uninstall them? The patch kit release
notes state that after baselining the system with dupatch - "You will
not
be able to revert to previous operating system states". So will I be
_able_ to uninstall them?!?
In summary :-
* Can I upgrade from 3.2G to V4.0 (not V4.0A)?
* Do I need to / will I be able to remove the 3.2G patches?
* Am I better off just performing a fresh install of V4.0D and restoring
user areas etc - my preferred choice at the moment :)
The previous administrators of this machine neglected to renew their
support contract with DEC so I'm unable to get help from that direction.
Therefore any help from the list would be greatly appreciated!
Gavin Smith.
