NFS - great difference between read and write performance

Dear managers!

We have to boxes (one Linux, the other DEC UNIX, V 3.2C) which are both NFS
servers as well as NFS clients and a number of PCNFS clients. Recently, we
noticed the following problem:

The time needed to write a file on the exported file system of the DEC box
is much longer than the time needed to read from that box.

E.g., from the Linux box we need about 8s for writing a 40k file to
and about 0.01s for reading it from the DEC box. The PCNFS clients show the
same effect. On the other hand, if the Linux box acts as server, we have
equal (and fast) read and write performance with PCNFS clients as well as
the DEC client.

There have been no recent changes in NFS client or server configuration.
The problem was noticed some days ago when users complained about bad
performance.

We tried increasing NUM_NFSD and NUM_NFSIOD, but that didn't change
anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
