Welp, here's the resolution for this:
One of the disks in the RAID dropped dead (the array had 6 2.1GB drives).
Unfortunately, even though it was a RAID5 array, ADVFS lost it's will to
live and the whole file system corrupted.
According to the DEC (sorry, compaq) engineer, ADVFS "Doesn't handle
hardware faults very well". To me, this really defeats the entire purpose
of having RAID.
Anyways, we have replaced the disk, rebuilt the array, and restored from
tape. Luckily, the automated backup had run about 5 hours earlier so very
little data was lost (BTW, VIVA LE BRU!).
On a side note, the tech support seemed to have gone downhill quite a bit
since the last time I used them before the merger. No engineers were
available for several hours, the droids taking the initial calls gave me a
lot of runaround (is this really an emergency? Are you sure there's a
problem?). I'm really hoping that Compaq isn't slashing technical
support, or I might have to find another platform to sell and install.
