Two network cards on the same lan?

Hello Managers

I have to set up two network interface cards to the same lan, that is IP
addresses of, e.g.,
192.1.1.10 and 192.1.1.11. The idea is (a) if the primary interface blows,
use the secondary interface, and (b) perhaps to set up some sort of load
balancing.

I personally believe that a single card should be able to handle all the
traffic. Brushing aside all other considerations (such as using a separate
lan), my questions are

(1) Is it even possible to configure two cards on the same lan? And to use
them simultaneously?
(2) The hostname will be associated with the primary interface, and a
different name for the secondary interface. What happens if the primary
blows? i.e., will a manual update to /etc/hosts be necessary for all
normaal traffic to work?
(3) What are the implications for outgoing and inbound traffic?

thanks in advance
