Can't remove login

Hello,
I have a Digital Unix v4.0d patch #002 running on base security.
Last day I tried to remove an old unused account and the
userdel command replied:
Working ...userdel: Password entry is corrupted. Please repair the password
file and then run Account Manager

By visual inspection, and by 'pwck' the /etc/passwd file doesn't seem
to be corrupted, there are only some missing optional shell for
administrative functions.
I also tried to do a 'mkpasswd /etc/passwd' in case there were some
problem with the indexed db, but this didn't solved my problem.

Any hints?
