RRD46 != boot device

Last year we had to replace an older RRD42 with an RRD46 as the CDROM on a
DEC 3000/400, running 4.0B and at Firmware rev 6.9. This drive has
worked just fine for mounting CD's, etc. The only thing I had not had
occasion to test was it's ability to work as a boot device. We're getting
ready to do some upgrades and you guessed it, the device won't work as a
boot device. The boot procedure starts, goes through the AUDIT_BOOT, and
the CDROM locks in access mode and the system freezes.

My initial guess is that there is some jumper somewhere that is set wrong.
Can anyone tell me what might be up with this device. This is NOT the
non-DEC CDROM problem that we ran across several years ago when we found
that some flavors of CDROM hardware could not be used as boot devices - we
bought this thing from DEC fer crying out loud!

Any and all help would be most welcome, thanks.
