External modem configuration

Hello all:

I've been attempting to configure an external modem on one of my com
ports.

I have an Alpha 1000A with two ports that are labelled 1 and 2
respectively. My serial console is connected to 1 and works fine, so I
connected the modem to 2.

As far as I know, com 1 is /dev/tty00, com 2 is /dev/tty01 and the
console is /dev/console or /dev/tty (right?)

When I use tip to connect to the modem, I get a connected message, but
cannot get any response from the modem via at commands. I've double
checked the switch settings on the modem and everything looks fine. I
have an entry in my /etc/remote file as follows
b9600:dv=/dev/tty01:br#9600:pa=none: I've been following the
instructions in the modem man page and am bogged down at this point.

Any thoughts (help!) would be greatly appreciated!
