Full-time (split 29.6 hours per week on ADAM, 7.4 hours on VADS)
Grade F, salary in the range 18,055 GBP - 20,413 GBP per annum
Contract initially until 31 July 1999
The Art, Design, Architecture & Media Information Gateway (ADAM,
http://adam.ac.uk/) and the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS,
http://vads.ahds.ac.uk/) are national services funded by the Joint
Information Systems Committee for the benefit of the UK Higher Education
community, and have a mission to provide that community with quality
visual arts information over the Internet. This is being achieved using
a combination of in-depth subject knowledge, information management
expertise and state-of-the-art technology. The two services rely
entirely on a shared Digital Alphaserver machine running Digital UNIX,
based at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, both to deliver
their core services and to support communication between the distributed
team members.
An opportunity has arisen at UNN for a full-time Technical Officer to
support the technical maintenance and development of these two
innovative services, in the first instance until the end of the current
funding period, 31 July 1999. Applicants should be able to demonstrate
abilities and experience in:
- UNIX (preferably Digital UNIX) systems administration and maintenance
- Web site management (preferably using Apache)
- CGI programming
- Perl scripting
- Database administration
Some interest or experience in the following would also be advantageous:
- Internet resource discovery
- Harvesting and metadata
- User interface design
- ROADS software
- System Simulation Ltd's Index+ software
- Hughes Technologies Pty. Ltd's Mini SQL software
- The visual arts
