Fortunately, this problem went away after I had done some
damage control. I booted from CD-ROM, mounted my / and
/usr filesystems and backed them up to tape. When I
shut down again, I tried one last desperation boot which
worked. I quickly updated to 4.0d with no further problems.

I received only one response on this problem. Thanks to
Michael Bradford who suggested that I verify my firmware
and ECU versions.

Sorry to waste bandwidth with this.
