Greetings list -
I would love some advice or pointers on the following:
BACKGROUND: I have two AlphaServer 1000A's, both of which have #9 Motion
331 video cards with 1MB, both of which recognize an S3 Trio64/Trio32
chipset upon machine powerup. They run at the same resolution
(1024x768x256, I believe), same Xservers.conf config, but may have
different subsystems installed (MME? Open3D? I haven't done a list
comparison yet). They are both running 4.0D with the latest patchsets,
but someone else installed the one that works and they must have done
something that I haven't.
PROBLEM: One system, the one with a fresh OS install, has a markedly
different (read: bad) video output. Take the graphics, for example, on
the login screen. The colored squares around "digital unix" are markedly
grainier in texture than the same screen on the other 1000A. Once logged
in, the fonts (dtterm, xterm, netscape, the cde control bar) are even
worse. They are extremely blocky until the size is increased to something
like 14.5pt, and even then it is noticeable. On the other 1000A, I can
take the font size WAY down and the font is still PERFECTLY readable.
A mediocre video card I can deal with, but different performance with the
same hardware? There must be a solution!
Any suggestions? Comments? My eyes thank you.
