Dere Guru's,
I'm having an interesting problem with an AS500au (DU4.0D). We are trying
to move a parallel printer from an AS255/500 (DU4.0B) to a AS500au box and
the printing becomes erratic when we use the AS500au. Jobs stopping in the
middle, printer stalling for minutes/hours on end, jobs disappearing all
together, "lp0: printer offline" messages popping up on the console even
when the printer IS online! I'm using LPRng lpr/lpd (v3.5.1) on both
systems and the printcap entries are exactly the same. The AS255 prints
perfectly, we switch the printer across to the AS500au and printing goes
out the window.
Now, the PC guy who was helping me with the switchover thinks it sounds
like IRQ contention on the AS500au. This AS500au has 2 extra PCI SCSI
controllers (QLogic ISP1040B's running 3 discs each) and an extra PCI DEC
Tulip ethernet card, along with the usual ISA devices: kbd, mouse,
soundcard, eide, floppy, com1, com2, lpt1, onboard ethernet.
How do I find out what IRQ's the PCI devices have been assigned? Can I do
it from Unix or eprom level? (iconfig/isacfg shows the ISA devices) How
would I know if there was a conflict? Would a device work some times and
not others?
I was going to arrange some downtime (it's our main "server" - we're a
university we don't get REAL servers!), and disable some of the ISA
devices, say, the mouse and soundcard. Would that help? Do those IRQ's
then become available for PCI devices? Or do I have to do some other
magic?
Any other ideas? Thanks.
