Upgrading using installupdate

Help:

I'm trying to update the DEC 3000/800 system using /sbin/installupdate
from v3.2D to v4.0.

I get an error saying that certain files in /sys must be symbolically
linked to their corresponding files in /usr/sys. However, when I do
this, I get the error that the /sys directory should be symbolically
linked to /usr/sys.

Is there a way out of this loop?
