Ghostscript 5.50, jpeg 6b

I'm trying to compile ghostscript 5.5 under DU4.0D with jpeg-6b. No
matter what I do, it seems I have to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to get it to
locate the shared library (cc -Wl,-rpath -Wl,[path to jpeg] doesn't
even help). I know there's a /usr/shlib/libjpeg.so but moving that out
of the way doesn't help things.
